Media Snackers – What you talkin’ ’bout?
Oooh, a new buzz phrase!
One Aussie blogger who always makes me think a little deeper is Gavin Heaton. Well Gavin’s tagged me with a meme which, true to form, has made me think.
What is a Media Snacker?
Well according to this (90 second embedded video – why don’t these go through the feed anymore?), Media Snackers are young people who consume “Wherever, Whenever and Whatever” they like. Media Snackers are also likely to create as much as they consume. Snacking involves the use of new technologies like iPods (music and podcasts on demand), mobile phones, flickr, Youtube, blogging, rss, instant messaging, social networking. They like to multi-task and have multiple conversations.
One thing I object to (as do others) however, the video has multiple reference to Media Snackers being “young people”. I don’t think “young” as anything to do with it. Unless the video is pitched to the over 70’s, “young” would generally infer to me people under say, 25. But the same argument can be made about Gen C.
The source of this meme is Jeremiah Owyang who asks “Do you Respect Media Snackers“?
How do I respect Media Snackers?
Personally and on this blog:
- offering a full content rss feed
- offering an email subscription option
- providing a widget to preview items from other Australian bloggers
- making my blog easy to navigate by providing a search, blogroll, archives, categories and links to my favorite articles
- encouraging comments (and thereby contributing to “multiple conversations”) and responding to a vast majority
- making myself accessible via a multitude of social networks and messaging platforms (see about me)
Professionally
1. Developing a business directory which;
- provides quick delivery of information (whatever),
- enables businesses to add their details at their convenience (whenever),
- permits businesses to add comprehensive information (whatever, user generated content)
- facilitates multiple communication via QuoteMe!,
- allows users to leave business reviews (consumer generated content)
- mobile business search (whatever, whenever, wherever)
2. Developing a dating site.
3. Developing a funeral notice website, independent of specific newspaper publications.
How I’m probably disrespectful (and no offense intended)
I don’t;
- provide alternative form of communication (eg video or podcasting),
- write concise “snack sized” posts,
- have a subscribe to comments facility (still looking into another plugin),
- have print friendly formatting,
- have a mobile specific layout (though perhaps not too bad).
So what’s your view of “Media Snackers”? Do you agree we’ve become a society of snackers and do you respect them?
I’m also tagging Laurel, Trevor, Lee, Katie and Stephen (John I was going to tag you, but you’ve already had a say).

Sorry, but in the best ‘snacking’ tradition I’ve already moved on… (plus I had already posted about it )

New terms. love ’em and hate ’em. Need to read this more thoroughly so I can digest it (ooh a pun!) when I am not so bog tired….
I expect I am raising a couple of them considering my girls are right now listening to their ipods while chatting on IM with their friends……
Hi Kelly
Hope you’re feeling better
Did you mean:
a) dog tired
b) blog tired
c) really bog tired (which is understandable)
Loved your pun BTW – I grew up on them
Mmmmm pizza…. Yummy…
I think that term fits me quite well; I’m really good at absorbing tons of information, in pretty much any way possible – email, rss, anything.
However, I don’t think that writing long articles is a bad thing for “snackers” 😉
Sephyroth
Sephyroth – Would you agree though, that it’s not necessarily a “young” thing?
I read about “attention deficit” and I just wonder if long posts aren’t catering for this “gimme the facts NOW” mentality.
Sorry Megalicious, I got tagged by JJ.
Meg,
I remember reading about this kind of behaviour in a magazine called Mondo 2000 in the 1990s – wish I could remember the reference – but it was to do with JIT information availability as a niche that could be exploited (people with hair-trigger reflexes for seeking new information sources).
PS: as to your dating site – sue me, I had a look, and I can’t believe that http://dating.dlook.com.au/profile?list=search&dName=VitalViv is interested in men to 50. Women that look like her don’t date 40 year olds, let alone 50 year olds 80 year olds with heart problems, perhaps. Is she a real person?
Hi Laurel – aren’t we the popular one 😉
Andrew – 😀 – Maybe it’s an old photo? I have some great pics from about 10 years ago…
Andrew
Women that look like her love older men, especially the rich ones!
Hi Meg,
she does look around 36 – and c’mon, we’re all friends here, you are allowed to share those old photos
Best regards, Andrew
