Australian Idol – and now there’s seven

Published by at 8:34 pm under Australian Idol

Yes folks, due to popular demand* I’m doing another Australian Idol update.

Last week was the acoustic (“unplugged”) edition. When I think of this genre of music, Jimmy Barnes Flesh and Wood pops into my head. I think of raw music along the lines of “The Weight” or “It will be alright”. Frankly, I was surprised at the song choices and overall I didn’t think that it was all that “acoustic”.

Daniel scored a touchdown from Mark for his rendition of Kiss’ “I was Made for Loving you”.

I was really surprised that Mark got voted out. While I didn’t think he would win, there was probably a couple of people I thought would have first.

This week was the British Pop edition.

Carl sang “Can’t buy me love” – I thought it was a bit mean for Dicko to call it “snuff jazz”. At least the guy is sticking to his niche.

Tarisai ambitiously performed Queen’s “Need Somebody to Love” – I thought she struggled at one stage, but overall pretty awesome. A “touchdown” from Mark.

Ben performed Wonderwall that seemed to impress the judges, and apparently the voters too.

Marty – well, he’s never been my favourite. Why he’s still there is kinda beyond me. Dicko obviously agrees (and so does Marty too – in that he’s not doing his best) by calling for Idol “euthanasia”. A “drop kicko” from Dicko.

Jacob performed “Let it Be”, which ironically I thought was his best performance so far. But he lost in the public vote, and is out this week.

I have to add that I thought it was great during his farewell performance that he went and shook hands or hugged all the other contestants as well as the judges. I thought it was a heart warming gesture (well I got a bit teary) and a good show of sportsmanship.

Daniel sang “Message in a Bottle”. Meh.

Natalie sang a song called “Rehab”. WTF? Is anyone guiding the song choices here? I love Natalie’s voice but had to agree with the guy judges. It just wasn’t the right song choice. Mark said something like “Snow White in Rehab”, Dicko “Mickey Mouse Club House” and Kyle that she wasn’t enough of a “junkie slag” to carry it off. (No offense to the original artist).

Matt was last with “Bittersweet Symphony” and scored a “touchdown” from Mark. Need I say more?

Yes, actually I do. Kyle – please stop with the s*xual innuendo. Really, this is a family show and Matt is only 16. Last week it was a quip about being “g*y lovers” and this week about feeling “all tingly”. Dude, seriously, not cool and just a little creepy.

So next week should be interesting when the artists have to perform a song from the year they were born.

My top three are Matt, Tarisai and Natalie – if I was picking the winner it would be amongst these 3.

* ok, so only one. But Karen did ask nicely and I’m sure Cellobella will agree with the comments about Marty

    Oh goodie! :)

Well, as I was saying to you earlier, I also loved Jacob’s gesture of sportsmanship, and I bet a whole lot of people are saying now, “Damn, I wish I’d’ve voted for him now” (myself included, because I really liked him!)

Matt, Tarisai and Ben are in my Top 3. (which I know is a bit of a turnaround because last time I said Tarisai does nothing for me – but she brokethrough!)

Natalie just does nothing for me? She has a lovely voice but I’m waiting for that ‘20% extra’, as Mark calls it…

Go Ben! I love him :)

    Hi Meg,

how many people will switch off now that the alleged AoG/Hillsong affiliation of the remaining Idols have been revealed? It’s sort of put me off it.

    Cheers, Andrew

Thanks Karen – glad you got to have your say :)

Andrew – I don’t know much about that – could it not just be a co-incidence? From what I understand, Ben, Matt, Tarisai & Daniel are reported to be members, but I can’t say that I disagree with them still being there (well, I’m not a big Ben fan, but others are). Now if Marty was a member, then I’d be a bit suss.

I love your updates Meg, only cause the show is on during the “witching hour” and I never get the chance to sit down and watch it.

I never warmed to Jacob, so I have no real emotion about him going, everyone’s talking about that final song though. I might have to check out the website.

Ben is growing on me. I still think Matt will win. I don’t think either of the girls will. And don’t forget all the Mummy’s voting for Carl. Don’t rule him out yet. There’s something about him.

Oh ok, I’ll go look on the website then!

I SO agree about Marty but Dicko calling for him to be euthanised was a sure fire way to get him to stay. We Aussies don’t like to be told what to do by Pommies in positions of authority.

I also agree with you regarding Kyle – he needs to come up with a new way to compliment Matt.

I agree with Kyle re Daniel… don’t know what it is (apart from stuffing up a great song) but there is something “meh” about him…

So my picks remain the same as yours… although I like Ben too.

And the Hillsong thing… well I didn’t know they were Hillsongers until Channel 7 pointed that out so I’m not sure how effective a guerilla branding move it was until then…

And as you say… maybe they are just good singers.

Kin – oh good, glad there’s another interested person!

CB – I liked your update too
