Idol Chat – Final 10

Published by at 10:36 pm under Australian Idol

As I previously mentioned, I have a vested interest in watching this year’s Australian Idol, as two of my children know Matt Corby.

I have to say it was really great to see him get a highly coveted “touchdown” from judge Mark Holden tonight. Matt, along with Tarasai, would have to be my favourite performers.

This week’s disco edition seemed to please the judges much more than last week’s rock show. The highlights for me (in order of performance):

  • Tarisai Vushe performing Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff”.
  • Mark da Costa’s (brave) version of Tina Turner’s “Nutbush City Limits”.
  • Matt Corby performing the Beatles “Got to get you into my Life” (though I don’t know that I would have classified it as “disco”).
  • Natalie Gauci singing Gloria Gaynor’s “I will Survive” (though I do agree with Mark’s comments about the “vocal gymnastics” at the beginning of the song – I don’t think it was necessary. She has a solid vocal ability, but why mess with the original?).

Other Thoughts

Lana Krost – she’s got such a sweet voice, but I don’t think the last two weeks have really been her “cup of tea”.

Daniel Mifsud – I like him, but don’t think this week was one of his better performances.

Carl Riseley – I love his style, and thought he was pretty good tonight. Given that he’s new to vocals, I think he’s done amazingly well. I just don’t know that his style is “commercial” enough for broad appeal.

Marty Simpson – I wasn’t feeling it – and haven’t for a while.

Ben McKenzie – I’m yet to be moved, but the judges (and voting public) seem to like him.

Jacob Butler – sorry mate, no cigar.

Marcia is being so sweet with her comments. She provides a wonderful balance and shows how to find a positive in every performance – no matter how disastrous. I love her style :)

So, if it was me voting for the bottom three – I’d be voting Marty, Ben and Jacob.

But that’s my opinion. What did you think?

I like Ben. I like most of them actually. I was Tarisai’s biggest fan up until a few weeks ago, but she just hasn’t delivered for me. I enjoyed “Got to get you into my life”, but I’m afraid I can never hear anybody but the beatles sing that song!

My pick for bottom 3: Lana, Daniel, Carl

I like Ben, but then I haven’t been able to watch any of the finals shows yet! I LOVE Matt, and I really think he’s going to be in the final 2, if not the winner. I also like Carl, because I love that style of music.

I have more thoughts, but it’s too early in the morning!

It’s a small world, Daniel Misfud played at a mates engagement party (not organised just happened to be there) so I am following it as well although I’d rather not be.

@ Karen – wow, totally different bottom 3! Like beauty, I guess talent is in the ear of the listener… :)

@ Kin – all the performances are on the idol site (commercial free) if you get the chance to catch up (I know, priorities).

@ Gary – I’ve found it hard not to get “invested”, though wouldn’t go so far as to say I’d do it again next season.

Hello, I’m Selma. Great to come across another Aussie blog. I suspect Matt will win Idol. He delivers on all counts – looks, vocal ability and depth of musical knowledge. My hubby and I run a CD shop in the city and we constantly cringe at the song choices made by the contestants. Why did Jacob sing a Jamiroquai song for disco night? I think he’s got one of the best voices in the comp but he seems so eager to please that I think he’s going to blow it. Marty also has a great voice but he’s as stiff as a board. My bottom 3 pick – Marty, Lana and Jacob.

    Hi Selma

Nice to meet you and your blog :)

I agree – you do have to ask whether there’s anyone helping the contestants with their choice of songs, it’s absolutely critical at this stage.

I’m getting the vibe that Marty might have blown it…

I can’t read the whole post now because I am enjoying Australian Idol and won’t get to watch it till someone has uploaded it, since I’m not in Australia. :) But I am amazed – simply so much talent in your country – excellent. And I also like how the contestants actually look shell shocked to have a chance to be on stage. It kinda makes them more down-to-earth 😉

    Hi YC

Thanks for dropping by. Glad you’re enjoying the Australian Idol!

As much as I admire Marcia Hines as a performer and knowledge of the industry I do find it a bit frustrating that she rarely gives constructive comments about a performance. She often says things like – “I really dug what you did – you go girlfriend/boyfriend” – which for me is too non committal. On the other extreme I find Mark Holden’s theatrics to be just as annoying. I’m sure he has excellent knowledge of what performers need to do – but the way he explains this is often vague and sometimes insulting. Also the number of times he has deliberately call Tarisai – Tiramisu- just rude.

However it’s still a show to watch despite these annoyances.

    Hi Michael

I think sometimes she’s constructive, but if the others have already made their points (and usually in a blunt, brash kind of a way), I think Marcia tries to soften the blow a bit. She probably stirs the maternal “protective” instinct in me…

I don’t think you’re alone with your opinion of Mark – someone else made a similar comment (d’oh which I accidentally deleted). Speaking of which – it’s about THAT time :)

    Hey Karen

Wow 2/3! Frankly I’m stunned that Tarisai (and Daniel to a lesser extent) was there. I didn’t think that Lana would win, but surprised that she got voted out so early.

And I can’t believe Marty wasn’t there at all. I wonder what the voting demographic is, and why can’t it be a vote for who you DON’T want to see the following week?

    Ah, you live and learn…

  12. Cellobellaon 25 Sep 2007 at 12:26 am

Well I had Marty and Carl in the bottom two… and Lana – even though I like her I didn’t think she would survive all that long.

But I thought Marty was gone gone gone. And he should have been.

Tarasai was lucky to get in the bottom three – now she will probably go all the way as her fans won’t take her for granted anymore. And I reckon the producers put her in the bottom two to make sure of it.

I quite like the fact that you vote for who you like – it seems more positive somehow… although it is hard at these early stages where there are so many to choose from.

I suspect the voting is usually quite close.

    :)

  13. Megon 25 Sep 2007 at 9:58 am

    Hi CB

We made the same comment about Tarisai – wondering if people just assume she’ll be safe (i.e. voted for), so they cast their vote elsewhere.

I agree that voting for who you want IN is more positive, and probably yields a lot more votes (ie multiple voting), but voting for who you want out I think would lead to a more general consensus as to who doesn’t “deserve” to be there.

Do you think you’ll stick with it next week?

  14. Cellobellaon 25 Sep 2007 at 6:35 pm

Well I feel commited now that I’ve blogged about not being commited… must have been the act of blogging! So yes will probably watch now… :)
