Aussie Startups
Being involved in a two Australian startups, I feel somewhat of an affinity to other Aussies in the same predicament. It’s tough in this country, to launch a new product, service or website. Getting exposure and funding further complicates the battle.
Throughout 2007 I attempted to spotlight a few of these Aussie startups, but as my workload increased, I found less time available to do so. It’s not just a matter of whacking up a pre-prepared press release, to be fair to the (unpaid) review you need to investigate the product or service and the niche that it belongs to.
Similarly, it was a shame to see Startup Stories cease after just a few posts.
So I was very happy to receive an email from Vishal Sharma (VS Consulting) on Friday telling me about a new series he is planning to do.
Vishal first popped up on my radar when he wrote about Top Web 2.0 Apps in Australia, which was later posted at Read/Write Web – Top Web Apps in Australia. It was great to see some focus on the innovation coming out of Australia, and discussion about some of the challenges in this country.
Read/Write Web did a follow up, written by Ross Dawson entitled The Top 60 Web 2.0 Applications in Australia. Unfortunately the list is no long displaying on their site, but Ross had reproduced it and mentioned he is working on an update.
Any way, back to Vishal. He tells me that he is planning an Aussie Startup Carnival which will be hosted on a dedicated portal (subdomain) on his website.
Startups covered during this carnival will be from telecom, web, green computing, media and other segments. We are expecting more than 60 startups to be covered during this carnival. This will be a good place to know about people who are behind these startups, their approach, technology and their future plans. Details of how to enter into the carnival will be posted here next week.
Vishal is also looking for sponsors for the portal, by way of 125 x 125 pixel banners. Contact Vishal for pricing information.
There is also an event on Facebook, for those so inclined.
I will be looking forward to the carnival, as it’s a space that is still of interest to me.
