A Fairy Party

Published by at 3:50 pm under family

You might remember a few weeks ago I was lamenting on what to do for JT’s sixth birthday party?

I decided to go with a fairy theme, as JT is quite enamoured with fairies. So we sent out some fairy invitations before the end of the school year and ended up with ten little girls (including JT and her sister).

The thought of hiring a fairy to entertain crossed my mind… ever so briefly as I felt the going rate (between $250 and $350) could be better spent on other things 😉 .

So I approached Miss 14 about playing the role, and she graciously accepted. I bought her a wig, fairy wings, tiara and fairy wand and she donned one of her aunty’s hand-me down ball gowns. And she looked beautiful 😀 .

Decorations consisted of streamers and balloons (including some helium ones). We also bought matching fairy cups, plates and table cloth.

Miss 14 greeted all the guests as they arrived with a sprinkle of fairy dust (aka glitter), then she proceeding to do face painting (she is so artistic!) while the remaining girls played magical fairy statues (when the music stops the girls must make a fairy statue and remain absolutely still). Nibblies of chips and pink and white marshmallows were served throughout.

This kept them busy until lunch – a bit of a cop out here as we served McDonalds and party sausage rolls, but they all seemed happy. Most six year old girls don’t eat much anyway!

After lunch the girls played pass the parcel. We had purchased some party favours (hair clips and other girly paraphernalia), so each girl had a prize.

Next on to craft time: we bought some beads and special strings in bulk, as well as special clasps, and had earlier divvied these up into little chiffon like bags for the girls. They proceeded to make their choice of a necklace, bracelet or special “room decoration”.

After that the girls played “pin the wings on the fairy”. I made the poster by enlarging an image and printing on A3 paper. A bit of photo-shopping allowed me to remove the wings from the fairy. I then printed a pair of wings separately, and cut these out and glued onto some cardboard. Bluetack was used as the “pin”, and each time the position was circled with highlighter and marked with the girl’s initials.

It was getting close to home time so we did the birthday cake, and JT opened her lovely presents.

Loot bags included lolly bags, and a small gift (hair accessories) for each girl, plus a helium balloon (their beading creation and prize from pass the parcel had been added into the bags).

The party lasted three hours and was supervised by Miss 14 and two adults (plus one who went out to pick up the McDonalds).

I thought I’d write this down in case anyone else is looking for some ideas. I think it all went pretty well, and it was certainly the most “creative” children’s party I’ve ever hosted 😉 .

*cries* I wish I was the 14 y.o that got picked, *sniffles*. Why can’t grown up girls wear fairy dresses anymore?

I think I should organise a “To Thine Own Avatar Be True” party and have everyone come dressed as their avatar. Bloggers as fairies and elves and robots and stuff :)

Around that age whenever someone asked me what I wanted to be when i grew up, “A fairy” was always the answer. I don’t think I’ve grown out of it so it seems like perfectly wonderful party to me.

It sounds like you, and Miss 14, did a stellar job with the whole thing!

Sounds like a great party and I am on the look out for ideas for Guerita´s 5th birthday in a few months. Great idea getting Miss 14 to act as fairy. I would baulk at paying $350 for entertainment. Well done!

lol….Meg! If you have big kids surely you’ve developed sufficient legitimate reasons why you just cannot have a birthday party.

Best birthday party we ever had was a pool party with 8 horrible 12 year old males. I was just in my element and I’m a pretty mean shot with the super dooper water shooter.

We made a weird looking pinata as a home school project and I had more fun than the kids when it was my turn for a hit at it (I discovered I LOVE violence).

Happy birthday Ms JT. I hope you grow up like your Mum, but, like, with fairy wings and sparkly stuff to make everything happen quicker so you don’t have to work as hard as she does.

I start work again tomorrow Meg so I’ll be back to my usual blog rounds – I DON’T WANT TO WORK, I WANT TO BLOG!

Sounds like Miss 14 was a real sport — how wonderful that she entertained the rest of the kids. A big success!

very ingenius *sigh* no little fairies here or big sister but it gives me inspiration for a cowboy party someday with my bigger ‘rodeo’ boy. Glad it worked out well and everyone enjoyed themselves.

    Great party idea!

I saw a ‘Flower Party’ on some reality show recently and was very taken with the little cakes baked inside terracotta pots. A foil wrapped flower stem was pushed inside each cake at the end of the party and they were sent home as the ‘treat bag’.

The children also got to decorate another small terracotta pot to take home with them.

What a fabulous idea for a party, Meg!
I have lots of would be fairies here… maybe I could even dress Noah in a fairy out fit…he seems to like pink things and jewellery! LOL Just joking…maybe…
