Marty Simpson Gone – About Time!

Published by at 9:23 pm under Australian Idol

Before I cover this week’s vote, I just have to say how impressed I was with Guy Sebastian’s performance. He performed a very energetic and thoroughly entertaining medley of “Midnight Hour”, “Knock on Wood” and “Hold on, I’m Coming”.

I am definitely going to buy his new release – The Memphis Album. I love most of these songs, including “Dock of the Bay” – one of my all time favourite songs. Yep, that’ll be on my Christmas list if I hold out that long!

*******************

We saw the last group performance – “I saw her Standing There” by the Beatles. I can’t really comment, as I missed most of it.

Instead of the bottom three (a bit redundant with only four contestants remaining), we saw two contestants chosen.

First up, Natalie vs Marty. The judges were asked to comment on who they thought would be there:

Roach Bomb

Dicko said Marty was as “resilient as a cockroach” and that he suspected you’d need a “skip load of Mortein” to get rid of him. Mark commented on his group performance wondering if he’d actually sung at all, to which Marty agreed “I am Useless”.

And Marty is (obviously) chosen.

Next between Carl and Matt, Kyle opined that Matt is a “superstar”, irrespective of the growth Carl has shown so he’d prefer to see Carl there, Marcia opted out of a choice, Dicko thought Matt might be in the bottom two and Mark picked Carl.

The votes were counted and Carl was joining Marty in the bottom two. Well, I guess someone else had to be there….

But, at the end of the day, and about 6 weeks later than it should have happened, Marty Simpson exits Australian Idol.

Surf’s up dude.

LOL Finally! I didn’t even hang around long enough to hear him “sing” again.

I was disappointed to see Carl in the bottom two :( I hope he makes it to the final two, but it’s not looking too promising. Unless Natalie stuffs it next week.

I think if they all perform like they did this week, Natalie and Matt will be the final two, and Natalie will win.

I’m sure Carl has a great future ahead of him though. I can’t wait for his first tour 😉

    Time to go Carl..

Hey Kin – me either, geez I think we’ve suffered enough!

    Tiffany – I’m with you.

From here on in is anyone’s guess.

I guess because I “know” Matt, he’s my sentimental favourite, so I’d like to see him through to final (and I do think he’s really talented). As much as Carl’s come a long way and I find him entertaining, I’d like to see Natalie through too.

So I guess I’m with you Kin :)

Hooray, at last. Bogan boy is gone. For him to have lasted this long, lots of his mates’ dole money must have been getting spent on voting.

Seriously though, it would have been very unjust for anyone else to have gone this week.

Carl must go through to the finals for the good of music! 😉

That said, I think he’s going next. Wasn’t surprising to see him in the bottom 2 this time even tho’ it was supposed to be his niche – it usually happens because voters probably feel he doesn’t need votes.

Yep Carl’s got to go next! Yay for the Australian voting public finally coming to their senses!

    Ian – 😀 – less beer money!

YC – it will be interesting to see who goes next.

    CB – Hear, hear!

    Oh no!
I don’t want Carl to go. He and Natalie can go through. I’d buy his CD, which would be the first time since Guy.
Doesn’t anyone think he (Matt) looks just like a younger version of Dean Gaiyer from last year?
I’m getting a little bit bored with that type.

Hi Tiffany – I really enjoyed Guy’s performance last night. Not having watched Idol before, I wasn’t really familiar with him (or Dean Gaiyer, for that matter).

I really wish Matt would do something nice with his hair! I’m sure it’s very fashionable, but I’d love to see him with something similar to Carl – I like the “clean cut” look :)

    Hey Meg,

Marty…finally!!! I think he should’ve gone weeks ago, and Ben should’ve stayed longer. He’s done well though, considering all the rumours and ‘talk’ about him! It was alittle sad.

But, what a great top 3. Tough choice, I’m still going with Matt to win though. It’s a ‘popularity contest’ as well as singing. And when people hear the word Matt, they scream. But, then again, Natalie and Carl are great too.

    Hard choice…

Ever thought what would happen if the people in the bottom 2 got the same number of votes???

Hey Lucy – I was wondering if you’d visit this week :)

I agree it’s going to be a hard choice. I reckon they’ll be under public scrutiny, so no time for any “stuff ups” on or off stage.

Can’t say I had given any thought to a tie. Maybe they’d toss a coin – probably fairer than the way the public has been voting (last night excepted)!

    See you next week :)

Hi! Off-topic a bit, but here goes. I have been following your posts on Australian Idol. It is only now that I feel compelled to bring up my concern regarding this show.

With this current episode, I have watched average talent blossom into real star quality. My concern is in regards to how they move on.

I understand they move on going on the number of votes they get. But is that a true indicator of talent. It sounds like a popularity contest and not a talent show. Is that what we want?

Heaven help us, if the contestent wins just because they got more votes than someone with lesser votes but with far greater talent.

-oh and Kyle is actually quite a good singer! 😉

    Hi Peter

Thanks for delurking on this topic. You certainly raise an interesting point. Last week I mentioned this in the comments:

“At the end of the day, who is the best judge of “talent”? We all have our different measures, likes and dislikes. What makes one artist more popular than another? Quite often it has very little to do with talent, and a lot to do with personality, performance and packaging.”

It’s a bit like “beauty” – what is beautiful to one person, may not be to another – it’s really is in the eye (or ear, in this case) of the beholder.

When you’ve got a bunch of unqualified people voting (and I include myself in this category) and airing their opinion, it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day and not about raw talent. Unfortunately.

I firmly believe there are (tens of?) thousands of truly talented vocalists out there, and if talent was the only measure of success they’d all be rich. Sadly, it just doesn’t work out that way. Showbiz is a fickle industry and the recent voting only reflects how much luck and popularity is involved.

At the end of the day, it is a popularity contest. It hasn’t got alot to do with how talented the person is. Look at Casey versus Anthony. Based on votes Casey won Aussie Idol but Anthony really won because he sold the most albums (is that what you call them these days?).

I guess you just have to hope that the kids voting are also the people who are going to run out and spend the money on your music.
