Australian Federal Election called for November 24

Published by at 6:26 pm under Australia,Australian Election 2007

Just in case you hadn’t heard, the Australian federal election has been called for November 24, 2007.

Neerav has written a post urging people to enrol and register to vote. He says,

Due to changes in electoral laws if people’s details on the electoral roll are wrong they won’t be allowed to vote.

A few other resources:

If you need to enrol to vote, the deadline is 8 pm Wednesday 17th October. If your details are not up-to-date, you have until 8 pm on Tuesday 23rd October to update them.

Feel free to link to any other good resources you know of in the comments. Other than that, this ends my 2007 Australian Federal Election coverage 😉

Update: Hitwise show some interesting traffic statistics.

    Neerav

You’re most welcome. Thanks for the oz politics link, which I’ve added.

    Greg

I manage to successfully block most of it out 😉

I like Poll Bludger, Road to Surfdom, Simon Jackman, Mumble, Possum Politics and Crikey, which has a lot of the amateur and professional psephologists hard at it. This is nirvana season for those guys and they are pretty entertaining out of season. For most of these sites, the comments are as good or better than the articles. Most of the commenters are anti Howard, so you need to go somewhere else or be very brave and be prepared to be politically savaged if you dive into some of these comment threads backing HowardCo.

I can’t vote and have not lived somewhere where I can vote for over 20 years. The least I can do is educate myself and others.

Thanks for the info. I checked my enrollment and it was all correct, but Phill’s wasn’t. He’s currently downloading the enrollment form to fax it off so he can vote. So thanks for the heads up, I wondered why they kept sending me enrollment forms when I’d already updated my details! *grin*

Excellent summary! I’ll be linking to it, and Neerav’s post as well! And yes, there’s an end in sight!

Colin – Thanks for all those sites. I’m sure they have a lot of lurkers – I’ve read some of the comment threads, and it would take a brave soul to dive in! Sorry you can’t vote.

Katie – glad it was useful! Thanks to Neerav for the prod :)

Kin – I think it will be a loooong few weeks!

I’ve never been able to understand why voting is compulsory in this country.

I truly believe that we would always have a much better result if people voted because they wanted to vote.

At least that way we might have a more “informed” voter platform rather than the 100’s of 1000’s of votes which simply mimick the handouts at the polling booth and simply turn out to vote because they have to.

    To “Fat Bastard”
The reason for compulsory voting is avoid what has happened in the USA.
Debilitating long term disenfranchisement of minority groups.

Democracy is not meritocracy and certainly not plutocracy which is what you’re describing.

Read some history, read the relevant parts of the constitution and/or talk to people who have taken the time to do so, open your eyes and ears.
    Please educate yourself before commenting.
Your concept of an “informed voter” vs meekly following the how to vote cards is flawed and highly paternalistic. Stop being so arrogant, get off your bum and start helping others to become those “informed voters” you imply should be making the decisions for everyone else.
