Seven Years of Bad Luck?
JT mentioned hearing on tv how breaking a mirror means having seven years of bad luck.
Naturally a discussion on superstitions ensued, but it also reminded me of an incident involving my son 16 years ago.
31 December 1991
New Year’s Eve and we were having a few friends over. I was busy getting the house cleaned up (as you do when you’ve only got one child 😉 ). Next on the list was vacuuming, so I proceeded to do that.
My son was 8 months old and had been crawling for two months. He was at that stage where he would crawl to up to furniture and pull himself up to stand.
In the bedroom, where I was vacuuming, we had a black chome floor mirror on a stand that would pivot – something a little like this, but less sturdy.
You guessed it. Before I knew it my son had crawled up to the mirror and attempted to pull himself up. As if in slow motion I watched the whole mirror come crashing down on top of him, proceeding to shatter into what seemed a million pieces.
I froze, as did he – fortunately. Sitting there surrounded by glass. Not a peep. I move to pick him up, fearing the absolute worst.
And would you believe it. NOT A SCRATCH. Nada. Not one tiny mark.
So I don’t know about breaking a mirror bringing seven years of bad luck, seems to me he was pretty lucky.

Whoa – that’s dangerous! Some of those mirrors swing really quickly – obviously well lubricated. It’s lucky he didn’t get a scratch – that could have been a really terrible accident!

Our youngest did the same thing, although my full length mirror was an old wardrobe door so rather heavy. Fortunately when he pulled it over, he was to one side of it so it didn’t fall on him. He has been rather helpful to my decluttering efforts though – by breaking stuff!!!
You know, if we could convince people that breaking a mirror brought 7 years of good luck – it would. Self fulfilled prophecy and all that guff.

See that picture? I had the exact same one.
Notice I said ‘had’.
Boo took it in the bathroom with him to watch himself take a dump. I left him to go and clean a fecal mural and smash.
I had a rather large meltdown that night. And after cleaning the mess. A bottle of wine.
Lucky for both of us our kids seem to repel glass.

Hi Fadas
It is definitely a stupid saying!! Please don’t believe it for a second! And think about it – you were lucky not to be hurt, right?
