Nifty Loo for the Conservationist

Published by at 10:50 am under Australia, random

I was watching a spot of (rare) t.v. last night when I saw a segment on a new water saving toilet called the Profile (TM) from Caroma. How ingenious – a toilet suite with an inbuilt wash basin!

Profile Toilet from Caroma

The idea is that when you’re finished doing your business, you give it a flush. At the same time, this triggers fresh water in through the tap. You wash your hands, and the used hand washing water goes back into filling the cistern, ready for the next flush.

Caroma claim that the water savings are up to 70% on an 11L single flush loo with separate hand basin. It’s also Australia’s first “5 star” rated toilet (in terms of the WELS Scheme), requires no extra installation other than a standard toilet suite and can be used for new and existing installations.

What do you think? Clever or what? Even if it doesn’t have TiSP!

(Note: this is not a paid review, just something I thought is pretty novel)

I think it’s a great idea. I actually saw a guy with this on New Inventors awhile back, so either they have ripped of his idea..or he’s done well for himself and sold it.

Wouldn’t be any good for people with little kids tho, I’m sure you can picture it LOL

That sounds neat! Although a bit awkward to get to the handbasin – especially if you are short.

@ Leigh – oh yes I could :) And what if they used too much soap, I wonder if you’d have lots of bubbles – could kill two birds… 😉

@ Cellobella – true! And you probably wouldn’t want to lean back too far – ouch!

Looks great! I just wish the Americas would get off their bums and standardize something clearly as beneficial as this.

    Hi Patrick

    Thanks for dropping by.

“Get off their bums”! LOL 😀

What a wonderful idea – I am becoming more and more conscious of every drop of water that I unavoidably waste – from an environmental point of view. My pocket will feel it too with a planned water rate rise in Victoria of 100% over the next 5 years.

Hmm… 11L per flush, and that gets 5 stars from the government.

That toilet would be illegal here in the States – since 1994, all toilets sold here have had to be “low-flow”, which means that the maximum water used per flush is 6L – 1.6 gallons. Of course, most of the time they don’t get the job done (or so I hear, we still have one of the older 11L models, installed before ’94 😉 – and the 6L models I’ve used haven’t had that problem…)

Either way, I like the idea though I’m not totally sure about washing my hands with cold water.

@ Snos & Sue, thanks for dropping by.

@ Sephyroth – actually I worded that badly.

It’s a 70% improvement on the “old syle” 11L flush + normal basin. More common place these days are the 6/3L combo, full & half flush, and the 4.5/3L smartflush – savings are 17% and 10% respectively. This loo comes with a dual flush too.

    I didn’t think about the hot water…

I know you didn’t claim it was a new idea but these things have been available/required in Japan for years as a space saving necessity more than a conservational idea.

    EvilGod – thanks, I didn’t know that!
