Special Alexa Update for the Top 100 Aussie Blogs

Published by at 6:35 pm under alexa,Top Australian Blogs

As I mentioned earlier, the Alexa ranking changes have had a considerable effect on the top 100 list. While there were only two blogs debuting, there were another five that made it back into the list. The new blogs are:-

Probably of more significance, was that there was considerable movement – with some blogs moving by as many as 40 spots (yes, I know one blog moved by 42 spots, but this was due to Technorati rank, not Alexa). Three blogs moved out of the top 10; one of them out of the top 30, and another out of the top 40.

However, because the index also uses Technorati ranking, movement in the index cannot be solely attributed to changes in Alexa rank. This is why I displayed the changes in Alexa ranking on my earlier post.

I have opted not to include the (known) subscriber numbers this time around, and replaced that column with the change in rank. A negative figure means the position dropped, whereas positive is a gain in position. Don’t forget that data can be sorted by clicking on the heading in each column.

Unless there is another significant change released by Alexa, this update will replace the one scheduled in early May, so the next will be in mid May.

Of course the irony is those that are most vocal about this are the metabloggers [definition] – the ones more likely to be acutely aware of Alexa rank, attract tech savvy audiences, and therefore likely to have “lost” in the tweaking process. Those who gained are much less likely to be even aware of Alexa, and certainly less likely to blog about it ๐Ÿ˜‰ .

Hi Meg..its been awhile. I went from the mid 900,000’s to about mid 650,000 in the Alexa rankings! What a jump! Hope you have a good Easter next week.

    Much more accurate than before.

My main blog went from #58 to #35 and my travel blog went from #73 to #83

Also other sites which I know are quite popular like David Knox’s TV Tonight, Craig Harper and Flying Solo moved up the ranks quite a bit

My rank changed quite a bit. As far as I’m concerned, if I increase my rank in future it’ll be worth more. So no issues here :)

Although I always appreciate a link ๐Ÿ˜‰ your makes it appear as though I am concerned about my Alexa rank. I am not concerned about it at all. I’m sure you didn’t mean to give the impression that I was, but I just wanted to be clear.

I do not sell advertising, but I run a consultancy through my blog. Advertisers are concerned with such things, but I’m concerned about business. My search rankings for blog consulting are much important to me. :)

Peter – nice to hear from you. Glad Alexa’s going in the right direction for you. Efharisto for the reminder about [Greek] Easter – I can never keep track!

Neerav – it does seem to be more accurate. Here’s hoping… Glad to see you jumping up the ranks – lots of new links help too ๐Ÿ˜€

Ben – that’s a healthy way of looking at it. If our own stats are going nicely, then that’s best measure. The rest is just an arbitrary number.

Michael – ๐Ÿ˜ฎ didn’t mean it to appear that way at all, sorry. No Wikipedia definition to link to ๐Ÿ˜‰ so took the next best thing. It’s not a term that’s overly used (here), but certainly no offense intended… I have changed your link to [definition] instead…

Effect? What effect. I was 70 the old way with Hobart Daily and now I’m … 70.

Nice work with all the hard work on the list.

Greg – ๐Ÿ˜€ be happy that your increase in both Alexa Au rank and Technorati counteracted your decrease in global Alexa rank…. ๐Ÿ˜‰

But thanks for your thanks :)

    Hi Meg,
Thanks for all the hard work you do on this. I read your Alexa post and am in awe of your mathematical brilliance.

CB – Oh that’s funny ๐Ÿ˜€ . I was so close to asking my big kids to help me solve the equation

    if

    i = (3a + x + t)/5

    and I know i, a and t, how do I find x?

(so I could determine the (global) alexa ranks from last update. I only record the index, au rank and technorati). And I worked it out ALL BY MYSELF.

While I *felt* like a mathematical genius, year 10 eats this stuff for breakfast ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yah! Only down 1 which is pretty good considering Technorati seem to be stuffing around with my rank again. I was in the low 40s and then jumped up to the low 50s for some reason and have slowly been coming down from there (even though my authority has been increasing). I REALLY don’t get all this stuff but it’s fun all the same. I wonder if it’s mostly entrecarders who’ve been hit as I know entrecard seemed to push my alexa ranking up/down (I get confused as to what to say here????).

I guess I’ve never paid any attention to rankings there as far as any of the blogs I have. Maybe it makes a bigger difference to those who have monetized sites though.

I’ve resigned myself to not making the list no matter what the rankings do, I’m not sure why it bugs me LOL I guess everyone wants to be on a list!

Actually I’ve noticed my visits reaching a plateau but then my comments have gone up which is what I’ve always said I prefer so the changes to Alexa probably don’t worry me too much (or interest I suppose).

    I’m not bitter… really!!! :)

Lightening – told you that you hadn’t moved much! Yes, I had wondered if there was an association between active Entrecarding & a lower Alexa rank….

Andy – you’re still “big” to me :)

book_it – yeah, it would matter more if you’re monetised (or want to make it on a “top” list)

Lee – comments going up is good, means more interactivity and loyal readers (IMO). Hang in there anyway, you were # 108 (on 4/4), so not far off…

  16. Kelleyon 19 Apr 2008 at 7:12 pm

I have a question for you babe, sorta related. As my subscriber numbers grow my actual hits have decreased. While I know that x amount of people are reading in readers will the reduction in clicks through to my blog result in a reduction in rankings??? If so, maybe this will explain why some blogs never make it to the top 100 even though they are very successful.

Kelley’s last blog post..The biatch is going DOWN!

  17. Megon 20 Apr 2008 at 12:29 pm

    Kelley

Theoretically it could, and I know bloggers that burn partial feeds for that, or similar, reasons (which I personally don’t agree with).

Subscriber numbers are definitely a strong indicator of a blog’s success, but then again this does tend to favour blogs that have a more tech savvy audience – there are still a lot of people who don’t understand how to subscribe to feeds.

I think one of the best things a blogger can do is foster a commenting environment, which you do very well. I know from my own perspective that even if I don’t leave a comment on your blog, I like to click through to see what (witty things) other’s have said. And similarly what you’ve said in response to my, and other comments.

The best way a blogger can combat this to is give a lurker the reason to de-lurk or at least drop by. Every blog will have lurkers. People that might just read (via RSS), but not interact, but I think you’re to be commended on the way you encourage participation, which in itself can be as time consuming as (or more than) writing the post in the first place :)

  18. Kelleyon 20 Apr 2008 at 2:24 pm

    Thanks for the explanation babe.

I am so glad you notice how I am chained to this laptop :) The post itself takes the least time! LOL.

Heh… Alexa and Technorati have been – thus far – unknown beasts to me. But after seeing all this kerfuffle, I thought I should at least go and “claim” my blog at Technorati… so I’m slowly getting better, I swear! ๐Ÿ˜›
