Underbelly

Published by at 12:05 am under random

I’m sure I’ve mentioned before that I don’t watch a lot of Television. I’m predisposed to medical dramas such as ER and House, and also CSI.

But it seems I can’t avoid seeing plenty of ads for the new Australian drama Underbelly, to be shown on the Nine Network and airing tomorrow night (13/2).

It looks interesting (though probably a tad too violent) and it seems a while since I’ve watched a “good” Australian drama. So I’m hoping the hype lives up to expectation.

Channel Nine has just hit a bit of a road bump, however, as it looks as though the series will not be aired in Victoria:

A Supreme Court judge has issued a suppression order banning Channel Nine from broadcasting the gangland TV series Underbelly — which was due to premiere nationally tomorrow — in Victoria or on the internet.

The show has also raised some eyebrows over the viewing classification applied by Channel Nine (M rating) and the inappropriateness of the time slot (8.30pm).

I noticed that a lot of the content on the website has been stripped (after looking at a cached version) – more than likely in response to the suppression order.

Underbelly

Anyway, I’ll be interested to hear whether you are planning on watching Underbelly, or if you did – what you thought about it?

I have been really looking forward to this show. I love true crimes, and have read a lot of the books. There are so many great Aussie actors, surely they couldn’t have stuffed it up.

Was a little worried we wouldn’t get it at all, shame for Victorians. But I’m sure if people want to see it, they will.

Up against House tho, will have to IQ one.

My husband has read all the Underbelly books and worked at the County Court in Melbourne CBD for many years (security) so we were really looking forward to seeing the show.

Shame if it is not aired in Melbourne but there are always other ways to see it.

Leigh – they do seem to have lined up some good talent.

It IS a bummer about house – my DD said “see we need IQ”, but I rarely get the chance to watch the other chanels we get on Foxtel, let alone record any. I’ll have to see if I can find a VCR somewhere in the house (and a blank tape)…

Marita – yes, I imagine where there’s a will people will find a way 😉

I worked in law enforcement for a number of years and my area was organised crime, in particular what was happening in Melbourne. I lived Underbelly and have no real desire to watch a fabricated version of the events. Maybe in a couple of years time I will feel differently, but it is still just a little too close.

I’m going to record it and watch later. I just HAVE to watch the new episode of House more!

I’m a little worried about how Underbelly will be judging by other “quality” Australian drama like Sea Patrol and City Homicide, both of which featured often cringe worthy examples of acting and at times storyline.

I wonder how long it’ll take before it’s screened in Victoria? Channel 9 will be pi$$ed for sure. The amount they’ve spent advertising it would be huge! Yesterday I saw a tram fully decked out with Underbelly advertising. They don’t come cheap!

I also wonder how many victorians will have fallen victim to curiosity and downloaded the show via torrent sites?
