On the Blog Again

Published by at 12:09 am under blogging,Ego,egosurf, random

It occurred to me the other day that over the course of the last six weeks, I had written 52 posts. Of these, many were quite in-depth requiring a fair bit of effort.

I also realised (with a little help) it was way too much for a balanced life. And balance is very important.

It all started with NaBloPoMo, which kind of gets you in that rhythm of posting every day. And the more you post, the more you think you HAVE to post – if that makes sense. Post or perish πŸ˜‰

So I took some time off the last few days. The sky didn’t fall. You didn’t unsubscribe in droves (somehow I actually gained a few new subscribers – thanks :) ), and people kept visiting.

But anyhow, what a great weekend I had!

It started off with dinner with friends/business associates on Friday night at Manly, a suburb I haven’t visited for (20+?) years.

Saturday brought an engagement party for a relative, which was also very enjoyable.

Sunday was out for lunch with the family, and then Miss 4 performed to “Jingle Bells Rock” on stage at a Carols by Candle Light on Sunday night. And they got to do an encore. She was soooo cute.

Monday was spent catching up on some neglected work things.

Last night and today I spent some time on the “new project“. I’m doing a Big Kev – I’m excited! More to come soon – I promise πŸ˜‰

Overheard in the house:

MM (to Miss 4) – Oh you’re such a comedian! Do you know what a comedian is?
Miss 4 – Yes, it’s an animal that can change its appearance so it can camouflage.
MM – What?
Me – I think she’s talking about a cham-e-leon

Ego Searching

OMG did you hear the news? 47% of Americans have Googled their own name. Bet you’ve never tried that πŸ˜‰ </sarcasm>

Glad to hear that others cannot keep up with a daily post :-) NaBloPoMo was so hard for me.

I just did a Google search for my real name – its a worry how many times it turns up – so much for online privacy. I am even in two featured Google ads, one on the top and one in sidebar – through ziki.com. It appears on the first page of Google on a link to one of your posts too.

Also found out that people are trying to sell me. Apparently I am a vintage 1950’s doll. I just hope 55 was a good vintage year – I want to mature like fine wine :-) Sorry, you will only understand this if you know my surname.

You are doing a Big Kev? That either means you are selling cleaning products or are going to be on TV? Please tell us more.

I know what you mean!!! I often find myself obsessing about posting all the time which is good for 60% of the time but then I might have long pauses as I recharge.

The ego surf thing can be a bit of a blow to the ego LOL

I hate juggling projects that you desperately want to tell everyone about but shouldn’t!!

    Googling yourself? Me? Never.

I do it (occasionally) to make sure that I have’t accidentally used my surname anywhere. Googling my full name (without a middle name because I don’t have one) brings up NOTHING. Which is good.

Nablopomo put me into that daily posting thing for a long time. In fact I’ve only recently begun to get out of the habit.

There were a lot of excellent and useful lessons I learnt from it though – about planning posts, keeping notes of post ideas, getting more organised overall.

I also learnt that not every post has to be a stunning long well thought out thing, too. πŸ˜‰ That is the most important lesson I think.

I have to say I have been enjoying the more frequent posts from you. :)

    Cheers,
    Snoskred

Congraulations Meg on taking a break.
Sometimes we get so caught up in blogging that we just need to take a step back and chill out. Nice to have you back!

I have to admit I did visit yesterday to make sure my reader wasn’t playing up because I hadn’t seen a post from you for a few days. It’s nice that you could take a break.

I need to seriously think about whether I’ve gotten too attached to blogging and putting too much of my time into it right now. Now that I can post in advance, I’m putting pressure on myself to write posts for when I won’t be able to post, so that the blog keeps ticking over. In all honesty, most people will probably be too busy to read.

Another interesting thing I’ve noticed in the past 10 days or so is how many visits my old blog is still getting. Which makes me think there are quite a LOT of readers who don’t read every day anyway.

Looking forward to hearing about the new project. :-)

My name is quite famous and it is quite fun to look at all the other varieties. I am on their somewhere, but certainly not on page 1. I am still managing to blog regularly during the house move. I am just not able to visit too much.

Glad I am not the only one that is feeling a little overwhelmed by it all. I got into the habit of posting every day, took one day off and got a flurry of emails asking where I was.

Sounds like a wonderful weekend you had there babe, glad you enjoyed it. Personally I cannot wait till Christmas day so I can slow down a bit!

Just googled myself. My advocate name (I use an anglosized version of my long ethnic married name) I am there and apparently I am a scientist and a real estate agent in the US. My real name, nada. My maiden name….. apparently I am a racehorse!!! Cool!

Its good to have a break once in a while from blogging, i highly recommend it and the blogsphere will not end. You can also get sneaky and cheat with scheduled posts (i do that all the time (sshhh don’t tell anyone)

Those are nice stats Meg! I google myself occasionally to see what shows up… I think it’s fun to know.

On the other subject, sometimes, it can get a little overwhelming keeping up with all your projects… I have realised that this week and a break is well deserved.

Have a happy holiday, stay safe and I look forward to visiting here more often in 2008 :)

nablopomo indeed. Just found some old posts and emails laying around from the early 80s that managed to survive all the ensuing upgrades. Was going to drop them into the current blog for hysterical value but decided there wasn’t much point.

If you’re the kind of person that just enjoys writing stuff, it doesn’t really matter how often you do it. Suppose if you’re trying to earn a living at it or maintain a standing in the Alexa 100,000, you’ve got to do the daily gig – but it really messes with your life; not to mention that the income stream usually isn’t large enough to warrant skipping all the family time.

Looks like google has been messing with their algorithms again. A few months back I got about 600,000 hits on my name, down from a peak of over 2 million in 2002. Now it’s sitting at around 20,000.

Interesting… I don’t feel like I’m in an exponential downward spiral.

    Have a very merry Xmas.
