Blog Improvement Zone

Published by at 3:54 pm under blogging

Before you go throwing my own blog back in my face – yes I did publicly opt out of memes, and yes this is a meme. But I’m going to play along.

Why? Because Dane Morgan is such a nice guy that it’s impossible to say no! Talk about good karma! When I was having some problems with a WordPress Upgrade, Dane well and truly went out of his way to help me out (Dane also has a blog about WordPress Themes, Plugins and Hints).

So Dane has tagged me in his blog improvement meme, asking people to think about their blogs (“blogrospection” – cool term)

What do you really feel the need to improve about your blog? There has to be something. Something you know you could make or do better and you really want to and intend to, but for whatever reason, you just haven’t.

Dane goes on to say that he needs to post more frequently and named me as one of five bloggers that post frequently without over doing it.

So what do I need to do to improve this blog?

In order to make this a better blog (I’m picking one thing from a long list), I need to be more organised. I procrastinate, I get distracted – I am too disorganised. And I’m prone to whinge about it rather than do anything πŸ˜‰ . So I am going to tag four bloggers whose organisational skills are way better than mine.

  1. Snoskred – Snoskred is Getting Organised – Are You?
  2. Sephyroth – GYST Update
  3. Dawud Miracle – How to stay focused for Better Productivity
  4. Andrew Boyd – Blogging when you are tired (not specifically a productivity related post, but Andrew maintains numerous blogs and paid work).

I thought I’d also take this opportunity to get some feedback, if you don’t mind. I’m interested to hear what type of content you enjoy or don’t enjoy, or questions you need answered. I know you can’t please everybody – in a “one blog fits all” kind of a way – but any (constructive!) suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi Meg,

thank you for the link :)

I’m working on being organised – it is a skill and can be learnt. I know this because I get less disorganised as time goes by although some days I wonder :)

Blogrospection looks like a fine concept – if you can’t look at yourself, you will rarely be disappointed, but also rarely pleased. No time like the present!

    Best regards, and thanks, Andrew

I love your blog, Meg. The only thing I would change here is the link out color, and the headline color. I think they’re both the same. That shade of blue is a little too light for my eyes, it tends to blend into the page. I like links to jump out and slap me in the face, though. πŸ˜‰

As far as getting organised, it seems overwhelming at the beginning. I know that is why I procrastinated about it for a long time.

For me, ticking things off my daily planner and my checklists has helped me start the process of being more organised. The things I mentioned in that post you linked to are all working for me – I just had to commit to creating the habits.

Without any doubt, the one thing that I has made the most difference is “Do It Now”. If I have something in my hand, I put it back where it lives rather than put it down and get distracted – do it now, instead of later. If I think of something that needs doing, I do it on the spot if possible, rather than later.

On Tuesday the 9th of October our think tank topic will be time management. I am also writing a guest post on this topic for another blog, and I’ll send you a link to it when it is published. πŸ˜‰

    Cheers,

    Andrew

No worries – I look forward to your blogrospection :)

I’ll look forward to those posts. Speaking of “Do It Now” – thanks for the tip about the linking out – is the colour better or too bright.? Fresh eyes make all the difference, I simply can’t be objective!

That is certainly 100% better for my eyes, but possibly other readers may feel it is too bright for theirs. It is so hard to pick colors on the net, because it matters what kind of screen people use, how they have their brightness and contrast set, and how they view colors.

And well done on doing it now! πŸ˜‰ hehe

    Cheers!

Snos – Thanks, I dulled it down a little – to more a navy colour. I think there’s enough contrast.

    Meg – That’s better again. :)

    Hey Meg,

Thanks for joining in on this! I have to say I’m really glad I missed your post about opting out of memes or I would have skipped tagging you on this. But I love your blog, and truly appreciate your making this exception. :)

    Hey Dane

Thanks for that. Happy to do it, particularly as it wasn’t a personal type meme, and because you’ve been so helpful in the past – which I really appreciated :)

The brightness of links “grabbing people’s attention” is something I’d noticed about my team blog.
I’m off to change the link colours right now!
Taking notes here to improve the look of our blog, thanks again.

    An example of disorganization…

A few days ago I was tagged by Meg for a meme called the Blog Improvement Zone. She tagged me because I’m getting my world more organized. However, there are some stumbling blocks to my organization. I……

Being disorganised and not too unhappy about it, my blog is a reflection of this. Things I have done is to try to credit other peoples work better, move some of the widgets and things that I like, but which slow blog loading to a back up page, change my template to allow more space in my posts. Other than that, not too much. I am very impulsive about what I write about and I suppose that reflects in the range of subject matter. I am just not focussed enough in one area to want to have that kind of blog. I appreciate that other people can do that.
